~ East Tennessee State University ~
The baton twirlers at East Tennessee State, located in Johnson City TN, have the opportunity to twirl for halftime shows, pep ralleys, parades, basketball games, Band of America Exhibition and any other public events to which they are invited.

Twirlers use one, two and three batons and on occassion streamers. Typical skills include:

  • 1,2,3 turns vertical and horizontal
  • vertical and horizontal bows
  • vertical and horizontal regular and reverse illusions
  • vertical and horizontal forward roll
  • vertical and horizontal cartwheel
  • walkovers (are a nice touch :-))
The squad size ranges anywhere from 2 to 10 twirlers. Try-outs are held in early May in the mini-dome auxillary gym. Majorettes will be judged in four sections of try-outs:
Solo Routine An individual routine set to appropriate music demonstrating difficulty and originality, 2:00-3:30 min. in length.
Group Routine A short routine taught the day of try-outs by the head majorette
Marching Each majorette will be shown several marching techniques to execute as a group.
Freestyle At the end of try-outs, majorettes will have the opportunity to freestyle twirl to music as a group
Head majorette interviews and feature twirler try-outs follow and are closed to the public.

The football team at ETSU has not been very successful in the past years. It was determined in May 2003, that ETSU will only have one more football season. However, the athletic program has recently dropped to the Atlantic Sun Conference. It is undetermined whether the football program will be reintroduced and continue as normal. If this happens, majorettes will continue to perform with the band as planned. If the football program at ETSU is terminated, majorettes will be continued. However, instead of performing at half-time football games, they will perform at Basketball games and possibly enter competitions. Majorettes are a strong asset and tradition at ETSU and will go on, regardless of the football program.
