Julie Canterbury, Feature Twirler at the University of Iowa

Our Golden Girl is featured as part of the band during football pregame and halftime shows, pregame concerts, parades, the Band Extravaganza concerts in Hancher Auditorium, and at selected basketball games. Performance qualities we look for include speed, variety of tosses, multiple baton work, coordinated movement/footwork, dance ability and showmanship. Twirling for a potential audience of 70,000 fans in Kinnick Stadium demands large, fast, accurate and extremely visual movements.

Pres and Julie perform during the Iowa State game

The Hawkeye Marching Band rehearses Tuesday through Friday from 3:40PM until 5:30PM. We also rehearse on Saturday mornings on football game days. Our feature twirler receives a full tuition scholarship through the Department of Athletics

The Hawkeye Marching Band does not use a line or corps of twirlers for its football shows. Instead, they utilize a solo, "feature twirler" throughout our shows. This position requires outstanding twirling ability. Most twirlers who audition for this position are consistent contest winners, possess a high national ranking and hold regional and state titles.
